Artist of the Month

"Two Women. One Show"

Farley's own Jillian Soto and Hannah Miller.  Photos, paintings and drawings.

I love to take pictures in the early morning and at dusk. The lighting is better and you often find yourself pleasantly alone. I think in most of these pictures I was trying to convey a sense of quiet and just hoping that the colors would translate well once printed. I enjoyed being there to take the photograph as much as looking at the final product. While I do not take nearly as many photos anymore, these are representative of a desire to turn towards a more sculptural way of working. Hence, the irregular sizes and grommets.

My paintings are a simple examination. Sometimes the examining is just about the way that one layer of paint covers the one below it. Other times the examination delves a little deeper and picks over an internal question or focuses on what is happening with my surroundings.  Most of the time, however, my paintings are a combination of these three ideas. For me they often present more questions than they answer, prompting me to paint another.

Window Display of the Month

Steve Fidel Herraiz and his collection of 59 Chevy stuff

Steven Fidel Herraiz has been obsessed with '59 Chevrolets since he was five.

"The woman across the street had one and I remember playing with my Matchbox cars and staring at the back of her car.  It terrified me and thrilled me at the same time."
He owns a '59 Impala, a '59 El Camino, and a '59 Brookwood station wagon and is a avid collector of '59 Chevy memorabilia.

"Every time I come back to my car, I am filled with that same sense of terror and titillation, now teamed with pride of ownership.  I'm a lucky man."

Coffee Linked to Lower Dementia Risk

Drinking coffee may do more than just keep you awake. A new study suggests an intriguing potential link to mental health later in life, as well. Yet another reason to visit Farley’s!

Manager’s Corner

It’s February and that could only mean one thing—Valentines Day. Sometimes I wonder who made this holiday up. I mean, scantily clad angels wielding bows and arrows, heart-shaped boxes full of candy, stuffed animals, it’s enough to make any reasonable person reconsider. Unless of course you are a sucker for these things then I guess you are like me.

This month, Farley’s will be continuing the tradition of handing out Valentines and candy. Why? Because we have a crush on you.  Also, the coffee of the week will be moving to the 9th through the 14th, so you can enjoy it on Valentine’s Day. In keeping with the spirit of things, we will be serving Sweet Italian.

The featured artists this month are Hannah and myself! She will be displaying a range of paintings and I will be showing some older color photographs. The reception will be on the 3rd and we hope to see you there!

In other staff news, Frank is back from South Carolina. Bert is back from Philly and Josh’s new band, “Boyz IV Men,” is starting to play shows in the city.

You may notice that we have some new pastries in the evening lately.  Namely, the Chocolate Orange Torte and Raspberry Almond Tart.  On Wednesday evenings we now also feature cupcakes made by Jasmine Rae bakery. The flavors change weekly, so come in on Wednesday nights for a cupcake!

Happy Valentines Day and see you in the shop!
