Artist of the Month

Ralph Granich – Photographer

A protégé of Guggenheim Fellow and National Endowment of the Arts recipient Bill Dane, Granich's photos are both imaginative and innovative in conception. "For me, photography is a visual conversation between the subject, the viewer, and the camera." The resulting photos are rich in color and finely focused.

Window Display of the Month

Robin MacQuarrie, Baseball fan and collector extraordinaire

A San Francisco native, Robin MacQuarrie, first began going to baseball games at Candlestick Park back in 1978.  A few years down the road they began giving out plastic cups and being the collector he is, Robin decided to start collecting them. Since then, Robin has been to 37 different major league ball parks and has tried to obtain and keep the cups whenever possible. Hope you enjoy the trip into this part of baseball history.

Thanks to all those who donated toys for the Fire Fighters Toy Program. With your help, we donated five barrels of toys for needy families in San Francisco.

Manager's Corner

Well 2008 is upon us. Here at Farley's it seems like the year has flown by. In the coming month we will see more folks drinking decaf coffee as part of a New Year's resolution. January is a time of reflection and new beginnings and in the spirit of that I would like to share with you a few coffee facts adapted from the Specialty Coffee Association of America website:

  • Every day Americans drink more than 300 million cups of coffee.
  • Like wine and honey, specialty coffee has a unique flavor thanks to the microclimates that produce it.
  • In 1683 one pound of coffee in New York was worth as much as four acres of land.
  • Thanks to some popular commercials, some of us believe that coffee originated in Colombia or Brazil. Not so; it originated in Ethiopia.
  • Surprisingly, espresso contains less caffeine than a regular serving of drip coffee (yes it's true). In fact, in the espresso brewing method, water is in contact with the grounds for about 20 to 25 seconds and extracts less caffeine than methods that put water in contact with the grounds for several minutes.

So next time you get into that old disagreement about which has more caffeine - coffee or espresso, you can be sure to win.

Best to you and yours in 2008!
