Himachal is a small Indian State situated in the Himalayan Mountains. It borders Tibet and Kashmir to the north and Punjab and Uttaranchal to the south. This exhibition is an intimate look at the people of this state which is located in a pivotal part of Asia. The portraits include Tibetan exiles, Nepalese migrant laborers, traveling carnival workers and more. In order to keep the subjects feeling comfortable I usually spend time casually waiting for them to interact with me. I give all the people I photograph an instant Polaroid print. This tends to bring out an attitude of pride because they know that the image being made is for them. This project expresses my passion for open interaction with people. Each Image invokes that time and space where I connected with a unique human being.

“As a cabdriver always driving around looking for passengers, I notice old signs on buildings. Now and then I’ll grab a visual motif and apply it to the word “TAXI”. The panels on display are from the Mission District.” Al is a longtime San Francisco taxicab driver. He got his medallion in 1984 and became AL300.

Hey Farley’s Folks. June is going to be an exciting month here at the shop. As Farley’s has been evolving, we have been trying out new ideas big and small. A lot of our energy lately has been going into having great quality and the right variety of things for all of you. So here’s the dish:
New vegan cookies! I am particularly fond of the ginger flavor. Also, the savory gougeres appear to have some fans as well. And the dirt bombs well, let’s just say, some people eat two.
In addition to new treats, we are also introducing a new espresso blend from Milton, owner of Sunrise Coffee Company in San Leandro. He is the same local artisan that has been roasting much of our whole bean coffee for many years now. The new espresso is very delicious and blended and roasted only for Farley’s, so we have to name it and we need your help. In the coming month we will be holding a “Name the New Espresso” contest with an awesome prize, of course. We hope you love it as much as we do.
We have also begun packing up our coffee grounds for all you gardeners out there. I have been told roses love the stuff. There is a crate by the condiment bar filled with bags of grounds and a sign on it. Please help yourself to some. See you in the shop!

Milton Coreas of Sunrise Coffee
Farley’s is proud to introduce a new proprietary blend of espresso that is hand roasted by Milton Coreas, owner of Sunrise Coffee in San Leandro. This new partnership allows Farley’s to control the taste and aroma of its espresso-based beverages.
Coreas began involvement in the coffee trade in El Salvador where as a young man, he picked coffee and worked in coffee mills. Coreas now owns a small 100 acre plantation in his home land that is growing organic and fair trade coffee. In the future, Coreas plans to build his own coffee mill to preserve the integrity of his estate grown coffees. In Coreas’ early days in the United States, he apprenticed with an East Bay roaster that was an outgrowth of one of the largest green bean importers on the West Coast.
Sunrise Coffee roasts in a vintage Probat roaster that is referred to as the Stradivarius of roasters. Coreas slow roasts small batches, only 30 to 100 pounds at a time. Thus he retains complete control over the quality avoiding sacrifices which would be made using an automated machine producing larger batches. It’s the small batch size and the operator that truly produce the blend Farley’s was looking for in a new espresso blend. Farley’s new proprietary blend is derived from two Central American and one South American bean. All beans are from small plantations and are shade grown “Pacas” coffee, thus making a more consistent blend. A small boutique batch is roasted each week exclusively for Farley’s.
In addition to the new exclusive blend Farley’s and Sunrise Coffee are producing, Farley’s barista, Josh, started an apprenticeship at Sunrise Coffee learning the art of roasting.
