 "Zen and Everyday Life"

05-25-09_0845

In this fleeting everyday reality I find it helpful to embrace practices that offer a way of living in harmony with the truth that we are constantly swimming in. I like to visually celebrate simple everyday beauty with whatever frame is available. The paintings I'm showing are found brush stroke paintings. They are inspired by the spontaneity of sumi-e drawings and the everyday aesthetic of John Cage, Marcel Duchamp and Robert Rauschenberg.

I will also offer a scrap motion mandala on the night of the reception. This is a spiraling reflection on the visual comings and goings that temporarily inhabit our pockets, eyes and hearts. A mandala is any form that expresses the totality of all worlds. I use urban ephemera to enliven this form in a contemporary way.

Window Display of the Month
OrigamiErica Skone-Rees

In 2006 Erica Skone-Rees lost much of her art and belongings in an apartment fire in North Oakland. As she sought to put her life and the pieces that remained back together she looked for new ways of expressing herself.  She found a YouTube video designed to teach self-learners the methodical ways of crane building.  Erica quickly gravitated to the craft and used it as a way to way to process time, loss, and the spiritual connection between individuals and objects.  In Japanese culture, the crane is considered a mythical or holy symbol said to represent honor, loyalty, long life and joy.  For Erica, folding chiyogami (brightly colored), aizome (dyed indigo), and momi (foil) paper into these symbols offers a meditative and therapeutic process.  With each completed crane bringing a deep sense of fulfillment. This month’s window installation allows Erica to combine her skills in jewelry design and painting with her origami process.  Although this piece creates a larger image for the viewer, it is within each fold and pattern that captures the artist's visceral transformation from loss to joy.

Origami - Origami is the art of paper folding. It was first developed by the Chinese, but was later adopted by the Japanese. Origami brings extra meaning to a piece of paper by shaping it into a form that has symbolism.

9 Reasons to Drink More Coffee!

More research is proving that coffee is actually healthy for you. So go on, have that latte without guilt: http://health.yahoo.com/experts/healthieryou/10497/9-reasons-to-drink-more-coffee

Manager’s Corner

Well it’s June. One of my favorite months in the city despite the cold wind blowing outside as I write this. San Francisco summers confuse me every year.

Lately in the shop I have noticed more customers getting coffee to stay. I have also heard from a few folks that they have been laid off from their jobs and are now looking for other work or finishing up long lost personal projects. I am glad to see that Farley’s remains a comfortable place to hang out and have a cup of coffee despite the economic woes out there. Nothing is recession-proof, but I feel like there is openness in the air and a sense of possibility here at Farley’s.

As many of you know, I will be relocating to Chicago in August to attend school. I will miss Farley’s more than I can express.  However, I am pleased to tell you that Farley’s couldn’t be in better hands. Joe will become the new Manager and Evan will be the new Assistant Manager. They have worked for the shop a number of years and are a great team.

During this transition, I have been given the awesome opportunity to assist in opening Farley’s East. If you haven’t already heard the news—Chris, Roger’s son, will be opening an Oakland location at 33 Grand Avenue in the Uptown district of Oakland this month! Farley’s East will feature the same great coffee and an expanded menu of delicious food choices. I hope to see many of you at the new location before I head out to Chicago!

Now I just have to find a good place to drink coffee in Chicago. I don’t even want to talk about Dunkin’ Donuts...

Thanks for your continued business and have a refill!
