Mark Faigenbaum is a mixed media artist and printmaker. He is drawn to objects that physically reflect the passage of time--decaying newspapers, old books, damaged photographs, outdated technical drawings and discarded machine parts. He combines these assorted materials to create shapes and patterns that move beyond purely physical representation to suggest invisible connections.
His new series of silkscreen prints called "The Teachings of Science and Superstition " uses images from old encyclopedias and esoteric texts. His work has been shown nationally and internationally. He has been an artist in residence at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and at San Francisco Recycling and Disposal. More of his work can be viewed at www.industrialmandalas.com.
Jeanne Storck has been collecting found photos for 10 years. She scours flea markets and antique stores for images discarded or forgotten by others, which on closer inspection reveal a hidden beauty. Her collection ranges from the 20s to the present. More photos can be viewed on her website: www.tinywindows.com.
As Farley's heads into its 20th year we are happy that it continues to be a destination spot for those on the hill and others looking to enjoy a moment in the neighborhood. People coming from other parts in the city never seem to end their love affair with Potrero Hill. They tell us, "It just feels more like a neighborhood up here," and I personally agree.
For those of you who are new to Farley's we encourage you to take a look around, enjoy yourself and be curious. One of the most fascinating things is the many Farley's journals. They are the black books lined up against the right-hand wall as you walk in. Inside their pages you will find drawings, break-up letters, musings on life, confessions, and other tidbits.
For you old schoolers out there who have been coming to Farley's for years and grown accustomed to our no-frills, one size, one milk (well, OK two) mantra, we have some surprises in store for you...
Beginning on March 17th, our anniversary, we will be offering non-fat milk---really. The demand for non-fat milk in the community has increased consistently in the past few years and as a coffee house whose mission is to serve the community in which it resides, we feel it's the thing to do.
But wait there's more…on the 17th, St. Patrick’s Day, while enjoying your non-fat latte at Farley's, you will be able to surf the net. That's right, we're goin' wireless! Email isn't just for executives trying to avoid the office anymore. It’s also for artists, activists, students, and pretty much everybody. We hope you enjoy this offering and use it to build more community, more friends and more positive change.
Hang on; I'm not done yet. If you have been in the last couple of weeks you have noticed we are getting greener. We now have compost and recycling bins for customer use. We also have a water station with reusable plastic cups. The feedback has been very positive and we are glad to hear it.
OK, this one, I am really excited about...We will also be offering a twenty-five cent discount on all beverages purchased by a card-carrying member of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition! We love folks on two-wheels and want to show our support.
As for requests for different kinds of brewed coffee, beginning the first week of March we will be offering a different selection of drip coffee for the first week of every month. We will always offer the old standby, "Jacks", but for the first week you will be able to try something new. I will be announcing it in this newsletter, so be on the lookout. From March 1 through the 7th we will be offering Organic Mexican Dark Roast in addition to Jack's.
It has been both difficult and exciting to initiate these changes. Farley's and the neighborhood have changed a lot in just the two years I have been here. We encourage you to maintain the "realness " of the place surrounded by good friends while enjoying a cup of coffee on our new bench.
