Peace Soldier
The Peace Soldier project provides a microphone for young American combat veterans to share their perspectives on the realities of war and the meaning of peace. The images and words of soldiers and veterans are presented as a new “voice” for peace through a range of creative work, including photo/essay exhibits featuring soldier portraits, music tracks sampling soldier voices and graphic/street art based on soldier quotes and images.
The Peace Soldier project was developed by the üba Foundation, a 501c3 public charity focused on promoting peace through art and is featured in cafes across the country coinciding with the U.N.’s International Day of Peace (September 21) and the public launch of the Peace Soldier project.

The Manager’s Corner – by Jillian
The other day I had a rather strange interaction with a cup. One of our regular customers came in with what seemed to be an unmarked white paper cup with a white plastic lid on top.
“Can I just get some iced coffee?” she said. “Sure,” I replied.
As I reached for the white paper cup, I realized it wasn’t made of paper at all, but porcelain. And the lid was made of flexible silicone. This surprised me a bit and I proceeded to ask twenty questions about the cup. You see, when you carry around an environmentally friendly faux paper cup, you get a lot of attention. You make a sustainable choice without having to sacrifice the satisfaction of the 12oz paper cup to go.
This month we will begin to sell the reusable “I Am Not a Paper Cup” for those of you who can’t resist the look and feel of a paper cup, but want to make more environmentally friendly choices. Plus, they are double-walled to keep heat in and fit conveniently in your car tray.
And to make life even more exciting, we will be releasing a limited number of round stickers featuring our new espresso, Portrero Nuevo. And they just so happen to fit perfectly on the new cups.
In product news, our assistant manager, Joe, has been hard at work putting together a tea menu that will make tea an even more important part of Farley’s. A couple months ago Joe and I went to Red Blossom Tea Company in Chinatown and had the pleasure of having a tea tasting with the owner, Peter. The teas were delicious and we have since decided to add some of them to our line-up.
The following loose-leaf teas are now available:
We have worked very hard creating a tea menu that is diverse and features some of the best regional-specific teas around. We hope you enjoy them and please feel free to ask questions about brew-time and provenance of any particular tea.
And last, but not least the Coffee of the Week for September will be a blend that we have created and named “Super 80 Dark Roast.” We know that many of you out there like your coffee dark, so we mixed a dark roasted coffee with another that is a little more complex to give it some flavor. Why the funny name? It is named after a model of commercial jet airliners and is sure to get you going as fast. Hope you enjoy it.
